Pink Floyd
Pink Floyd
Pink Floyd – Is there anybody out there…..who lived through the 70’s, and every decade since, who didn’t trip out to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon? The album broke records for the most time on the Billboard charts and remains popular today.
Dark Side of the Moon
But that was really just a small part of the Pink Floyd story. No doubt, Dark Side of the Moon was their breakthrough and biggest album, but there were plenty of albums prior to that, as well as after. However, with tunes like Brain Damage, Time, Money, and Us and Them, Dark Side of the moon is truly a classic among classics.
The Wall
Their next biggest commercial success was 1979’s “The Wall”, a double album set that was also produced as a big-screen movie. This full length film has been re-released on DVD, and includes a ‘making of’ documentary as well as other additional footage.
Early Stuff
Some of Pink Floyd’s early stuff can ONLY be described as ‘acid rock’. Tunes like ‘Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict’ (which, by the way is their longest song title) are strictly out of mind-bender land.
Drugs and mental health issues
Drugs and insanity did play a big part in the band, and is also a recurring theme in their lyrics. The song, Shine On You Crazy Diamond was written about Syd Barrett’s slip from sanity.
The Saga Continues
Pink Floyd is like a fine wine, they just get better with age. Of course, Syd Barrett and Roger Waters are no longer part of the band, but the creative genius of David Gilmour ensures that the band never strays too far from it’s roots. Syd Barrett passed away in July of 2006. Keyboardist Richard Wright passed away in September of 2008.
The Music is only part of it
Pink Floyd has always been famous for their incredible live performances, featuring an unbelievable laser light show as well as other amazing visual effects.
For concert footage, a couple of Pink Floyd videos should be at the top of anyone’s list. The first is “The Delicate Sound of Thunder.” The next is “Pulse”, recorded after the release of The Division Bell and shown at right. The concert footage is great, shut off all the lights and put it on a large screen and prepared to be amazed.
Also rated very highly is David Gilmour in Concert. He plays many of the tunes he wrote for Floyd on this DVD. We found this to be a very enjoyable escape from reality for an hour and a half.
